GELLING PASSION INTO CAREER
It is said that when you turn your passion into your profession, you’ll never work a day in your life. The society is gradually opening up to the idea that mainstream careers aren’t the only option to achieve success in your life. Today, there are numerous examples of people who turned their passion into careers. One such individual is Laxmee Thakur who turned his fascination towards hair styling and created an empire out of it. Laxmee Hair Salon is one of the prominent establishments in Kathmandu at present known especially for their customer centric approach and well trained employees. Highly in demand, Thakur squeezed a bit of time to discuss with TNM what he considers fundamental to salon success: creativity and passion.
WHAT LED YOU INTO THIS INDUSTRY? WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR ESTABLISHING LAXMEE HAIR SALON?
I have always considered hair-styling as a form of art, and have regarded this profession as a field filled to the brim with creativity. This initially sparked my curiosity in this field; however, you could say I discovered my passion in hair styling through the glamorous film industry as well. I used to get fascinated seeing all the different hairstyles of the actors in the movies, which further pushed me forward in this line of work. I first started by learning the field as a part timer but as time passed, this became a full time thing for me.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR WORKING ENVIRONMENT ORGANISED?
Organisation breeds success. We work in unison to run the company smoothly. The team operates like cogs and gears in a clock. I believe that organising the workplace is vital for the business to thrive long term. Along with establishing a sense of structure and order, an organised work environment promotes team spirit, which further increases productivity and efficiency.
WHAT MAKES LAXMEE HAIR SALON STAND OUT FROM OTHERS?
I cannot say for other salons but we take pride in the quality of service we provide here. At Laxmee hair salon, each and every one works with sheer passion and dedication. We regularly take feedback from our clients and try our best to improve in every possible way. We also try to keep up with the changing times and stay up-to-date on the newer trends and fashion so that we can meet the expectations of our customers.
When it comes to our services, we prioritise the satisfaction of our clients more than anything. We try to make them comfortable all the while maintaining the standard of quality and hygiene. We strive to provide our customers with utmost care and I believe that is what sets us apart from others.
HOW DO YOU RECRUIT YOUR EMPLOYEES?
We look for individuals who show serious dedication towards his/her work and are willing to learn and grow along with the salon. When we hire new employees, we have certain qualification requirements which the candidates have to meet. Once they are hired, they undergo the Laxmee Employee Training, which teaches them all about our values and beliefs.
We believe that one of the most important steps in developing an A-team is hiring the right kind of people to begin with. Then you nurture your employees in such a way that they can display their full potential, which in turn helps in smooth running of the salon.
IS LAXMEE HAIR SALON ENGAGED IN ANY CSR PROGRAMS?
We are indeed a business entity but I do not believe a company should be valued based on their corporate success. I have a personal belief that no matter our position or stature in life, we should always look to give back to the society we come from. We should always try to look for new ways to help those in need, so keeping this in mind, we have been partaking in donation to many foundations since we established 7-8 years ago. It all started back when I saw an article about an old-age home in Devghat in need of financial help. Since then, we have been helping them and few other organisations every year without fail. We have also contributed to Dhurmus Suntali Foundation for the reconstruction activities that they initiated after the devastating earthquake in 2015.
I believe helping out those in need enriches you as a human being and gives you a feeling of satisfaction in your life. This philosophy has led us to be active is the said CSR events.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE TO PEOPLE LOOKING FOR A FUTURE IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?
Like I previously mentioned, this field lets you explore your creativity like no other. The hair salon business is slowly starting to soar in the Nepalese market despite not being a mainstream career option. This field falls under the beauty market and because of this there is a lot of potential that still needs to be explored. If you have a serious interest in the beauty industry, you should not be afraid to pursue it. Another important thing is to understand how to maintain good relationship with clients and customers; after all, this is a field where you have to constantly interact with them.
