Man’s Best Friend

The bond between a man and his dog is special. For one thing, most men will readily baby talk to his dog but not to his girlfriend. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a reason they say a dog is a man’s best friend. It is one of the purest loves there is. We talk to two guys about their pooches and their experiences with them.

How long have you been together and the reason behind your decision of bringing him/ her home?

I’ve had Ashley for 4 months now and it’s been a blast. I’ve always loved dogs and I’ve had quite a few through the years. Ever since I watched the movie ‘Eight Below’ where Paul Walker starred with 8 Siberian Huskies, I always wanted to own one.

Share with us a fun moment you shared with your buddy.

Ashley tries terribly hard to keep calm while I prepare her meals, but she always ends up jumping and howling by the time I’m done. That always brings a smile to my face.

What silly pet name do you have for your dog?

When we play together, I call her Kanchi.

What is the best trick that you have ever taught your dog?

She’s still a kid, so there’s a lot more to learn. But she is beginning to learn how to sit and lay down on command.

What does Ashley make you do?

She makes me wake up early the morning as soon as she’s up.

Would you have ever adopted a street dog if you had the chance to, or any from a shelter for that matter?

Absolutely! In fact I had adopted a street dog, Kaley, a few years ago. I used to feed him outside my house and I took a liking to him so I brought him into my home.

Animal abuse is a maddeningly understated issue. What is your take on it?

I think there should be strict governing rules that oversee animal rights. I hope to god I don’t see anyone abusing animals, I don’t think I’d be able to hold back from giving them a piece of my mind.

Chains or No-chains?

Hell no! No chains.

How do you pamper your dog?

I give her cheese sometimes; that makes her very happy.

When it comes to your pet’s well-being what are your main concerns?

A proper diet and an hour long daily walk is a must. I also make sure I bathe her on a weekly basis.

What would you suggest to pet owners about noticing dog behaviours and regular check-ups?

If anyone has a pet I think they should read up about understanding a dog’s body language. This will help you communicate with your pooch better and understand him/her better. And for checkups, I think they must be taken every once a month. I go to Kathmandu Animal Hosiptal (Dr. Saroj Yadav).

Amit is well known for being a massive fanatic about anything that runs on two wheels, but it turns out that he is also crazy about dogs. In fact he has 3 of the most charismatic dogs we’ve ever met. We especially fell in love with Loki. He was the friendliest and probably the largest dog we’ve ever met.

How long have you been together and the reason behind your decision of bringing him/her home?

It was never my plan to own three dogs, especially because I love in a colony with people that don’t really appreciate dogs… especially one that looks like a bear and is eager to run rampant in the colony every chance he gets.

I was keeping Lily, my French Mastiff, for one of my friends who had ordered her. She stayed with me in my bedroom and I couldn’t help but fall in love with her. It was slightly difficult to convince my mom to welcome a third member into the family, but she eventually caved. Everyone from the family members help with the dogs, so it is a group effort.

What is the most mischievous / funniest or the most embarrassing moment that you have shared with your furry friend?

One time, I had two electricians over for some home maintenance. He had opened his shoes before entering the house. My dogs went to work on the shoes. One of the pairs’ had its right shoe in tatters while the other guy’s left shoe was rendered useless. It was embarrassing. I ended up giving a pair of my shoes to one of them while my brother gave up one of his so the electricians didn’t have to walk back to their work barefoot.

What is the best trick that you have ever taught your dog?

I hate training dogs to the point where they turn into robots obeying commands. They’re more like family members. I just taught them to sit and sleep and they are really good with that. One of my eldest dogs (Zeus) is a sheep dog and he is brilliant. I never trained him but he is pretty smart. The other 2 learn from Zeus.

What are the silly things that your dog makes you do?

I’ve cleaned a lot of poop, and let me tell you, Loki does justice to his size. And Lily is pretty notorious for dishing out some pretty stinky doodoo. And I can stick my entire head into Loki’s open jaw… which is cool.

Would you have ever adopted a street dog if you had the chance to, or any from a shelter for that matter?

Of course! Street dogs are smart and loyal and there is no reason to not own one. I have plans to adopt a stray dog, but I am already running at full capacity at the moment.

Your say on people who abuse animals.

His Holinessm the Dalai Lama once said “ Our prime purpose in this life is to help people and if you can’t help them, then at least don’t hurt them”. And I think this transcends to all animals, not just human beings.

Chains or No-chains?

Definitely no chains.

What special ways do you spoil & pamper your dog with?

I make sure my dogs get proper dog food, and every time I make a trip abroad I get their ration from a reliable source. And Lily gets to sleep in my bed.

When it comes to your pet’s well being, what are your concerns?

I pay attention to their health, energy level, weight & physical activity, cleanliness, and behavioural issues.

What would you suggest to pet owners about noticing dog behaviours and regular check-ups?

Even if you keep a close eye on your dog’s health, an annual visit to the vet for a thorough check up is the least that you should be doing. Apart from helping identify any newly emerging problems before they become serious, regular health assessments will give you the chance to keep your dog’s vaccinations up-to-date, accurately weigh your dog and find out more about any issues that may be worrying you. If you guys need a good vet I would recommend Veterinarian Saroj Yadav.
