what is it like to be an interior designer with chandra p.humagain
Interior design is much more than getting your decor right. Today we are trying to understand how important it really is. Gone are the days when it was thought that interior design was just a pompous expression for a certain sensitivity and good taste in decorating a space; something like choosing the right fabrics or colors to use. With the growing demand for space, there has been a steep rise in the per-square-foot price. This makes it an obvious reason why space is considered as an asset. Interior designing is all about creating spaces that is not only aesthetically appealing, but also comfortable and functional. In this regard, we had a talk with
Mr. Chandra P. Humagain the chairman at Interior Points and we talked about
what it’s like to be an interior designer.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY OF STARTING INTERIOR POINTS?
I have been working in this industry for the past 15 years. To break it down I have been doing this in Nepal for the past 10 years, but I gained my experience in this field from Dubai. I was there for 5 years. In this regard, Interior Points is on its 8th year now and it has been a pleasure doing this for a living.
THE FIRST TIME YOU VISIT A RESTAURANT, YOUR FIRST REACTION COMES FROM HOW IT LOOKS RATHER THAN HOW THE FOOD TASTES.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF PLANNING FOR A DESIGN TO THE FINAL HANDOVER OF THE PROJECT?
When it comes to space planning, you first need to consider the purpose of the room. Earlier, specific rooms were assigned for specific purposes. But today with the changing trends, a room can be multifunctional too. For example, a kitchen is designed in such a way that it is not only a work area to prepare food, but a space that can accommodate a dining area. Similarly, a bedroom can be extended to make enough space for a dressing room. So, the purpose and the additional functions of a space needs to be taken under consideration when in the planning phase. The point is to make the best of what is available.
HOW HAS INTERIOR DESIGNING CHANGED FROM WHAT IT WAS A DECADE AGO, AND WHERE IS IT HEADING NOW?
Today, space planning is no more restricted to residential spaces, but has floated to commercial projects too. An ideal space is one that can accommodate everything as well as give you the desired comfort. For example, if a living room is arranged with bulky furniture which leaves no room to accommodate anything else, then the whole idea about ‘space’ does not make sense. With a cluttered space like that, you’ll feel claustrophobic. Nowadays, there are more and more people realize the true importance of having a space taken care of by specialists who are mindful of presentation, comfortable, and a pleasant experience for all. Interior design is a process that provides its customers with a set of aesthetically pleasing but efficient solutions for a better use of the space in question. The goal of interior design is to improve the user experience by better managing the space available in the intervened environment.
SO, WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?
Importance of interior design is obvious when an interior designer has a great, successful career. But we will always need to introduce new ideas and techniques in order to maintain creativity in our designs. Being a successful interior designer will help the person to experience new tips and information.
A space should be designed or planned in such a way that it should be visually appealing. Say, the first time you visit a restaurant, your first reaction comes from how it looks rather than how the food tastes. First impressions are crucial in that manner. Similarly, space planning plays an important role when it comes to visualization. This concept of creating a visual synergy is much emphasized for an interior designer.
HOW DO YOU FIND THAT BALANCE BETWEEN THE CLIENTS NEED AND YOUR PERSONAL TOUCH AS A DESIGNER?
The challenge for every interior designer is to meet the requirements of his clients. But there are people who have been making their importance visible by being interior designers. It is often difficult to decide which interior design meets your needs and lifestyle the most because most designs usually do not show the need for improvements or alterations until you are actually using them. However, an interior designer will help you avoid finding yourself with a newly built or renovated house that could have been done better because all interior designers are trained to help their clients choose a design according to their lifestyle. But they do not only take care of the layout but they also help you choose the right decor, lighting, paint color, etc. depending on what you want to leave over to an expert and how much you can afford to spend on the project.
WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO MIGHT BE CONSIDERING TO HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?
To put it simply, you should at least have a little idea of what you like. Do you want your bedroom to be airy, cozy or just comfortable? So, once you are clear with the idea, you can go ahead and plan. An interior designer when designing space, has to keep in mind every client’s personal taste. We all have our taste and preferences especially when it comes to interiors. Space planning must successfully reflect what you are looking for.
